The effect of solar light and fluorescent light on plant morphology under different DIF conditions

MSc-thesis abstract (submitted 20 March 2017): Differences between day and night temperatures (DIF) can be used to regulate elongation. In fundamental research mainly fluorescent tubes are used and most of the time in combination with the plant species Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana).
However it is unknown what the implications are of using fluorescent tubes for the responses to DIF compared to natural light. Furthermore it is unknown if responses found for the model plant Arabidopsis are representative for crop species as tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).

This study shows that fundamental research done on DIF (+10°C and -10°C) under fluorescent tubes can be translated to more practical situations like a greenhouse, the effect of DIF will only get bigger.

There is also shown that results found in DIF research for model crop Arabidopsis can be translated into a crop plant as tomato.
In Arabidopsis the elongation effect is visible in total leaf length, whereas the elongation effect for tomato is visible in the length of the stem.

Lastly there are indications that sugar starvation plays an important role in the response to DIF.
