Toxicology Wageningen Food Safety Research

In the Toxicology team of Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR), we work on the development and application of in vitro novel approach methods (NAMs) for the hazard characterization of chemicals in food and feed. We also use in vitro methods to study the kinetics (intestinal uptake, (extra)hepatic metabolism, distribution and renal excretion) of chemicals, and integrate these data in physiologically based kinetic (PBK) models. The combination of these methods allows estimation of in vivo hazards, which we apply to prioritize hazards in the food and feed chain.

Examples of internships regarding toxicology:

Assess the toxic effects of chemicals in vitro using human cells

We regularly have a limited number of internship positions available on topics related to food toxicology, focusing on chemicals of relevance in food and feed. In a typical internship project, you assess the (toxic) effects of chemicals in vitro using human cells (such as assessing possible chemical-induced DNA damage, chemical effects on gene expression, etc.)

Assess the kinetics of chemicals using human cells and/or enzymes

It is also possible to perform an internship to assess the kinetics of chemicals using human cells and/or enzymes. The cell models we use allow us to study effects on, among others, the human intestine, liver, kidney, endocrine system and immune system.

Focus on computer modelling or perform a literature research

Other possibilities are to perform an internship project that focusses on computer modelling or to perform a literature research.
