Cacao
Nederland is wereldwijd de grootste verwerker van cacao. De belangrijkste handelsrelatie tussen Nederland en Ghana is cacao. Europa en de Verenigde Staten consumeren elk jaar meer chocolade en in landen als China, India en Brazilië neemt de vraag naar chocolade ook toe. De verwachting is dat er de komende jaren één miljoen ton meer cacao nodig is. De huidige productie ligt op vier miljoen ton per jaar. Om te zorgen dat over een aantal jaren nog voldoende cacao geproduceerd wordt, moet de teelt intensiever en duurzamer. Belangrijke uitdagingen daarbij zijn bestrijding van bodemuitputting en behoud van biodiversiteit.
Wageningen University & Research en duurzame cacao
Als wereldspeler in de cacaohandel heeft Nederland een grote rol in het streven naar duurzame chocola. In 2011 ondertekenden belangrijke ketenpartijen als Mars, HEMA en Plus supermarkten de ambitieuze doelstelling om in 2025 een volledig gecertificeerde cacaoconsumptie te hebben in Nederland. Wageningen Economic Research doet onderzoek naar de stand van zaken rondom de certificering. Lees meer hierover in het (engelstalige) rapport "Improving sustainability in coffee and cocoa".
Wageningen University & Research brengt initiatieven rond de verduurzaming van de importen van cacao samen in actiegericht onderzoek naar hoe verduurzaming te bewerkstellingen en hoe de effecten te meten. We geven inzicht in de stand van zaken: hoe duurzaam is de cacaoketen nu eigenlijk? Welke voordelen hebben bijvoorbeeld Ghanese boeren daarbij? We werken samen met certificering instanties, handelaren en ngo’s om het effect te onderzoeken van certificeringprocedures op de handel omvang, prijzen en de spelers in de keten, het milieu en de samenleving.
Herkomst cacaobonen
Wageningen Food Safety Research doet onderzoek naar de herkomst van cacaobonen. Het is daardoor mogelijk om verantwoord ondernemen terug te zien in het product. Ook maakt deze kennis over de herkomst van cacaobonen het mogelijk om meer grip te krijgen op voedselfraude.
