On a yearly basis Wageningen UR Library monitors the usage of online journals. In total, for 2013, 3.8 million scientific articles have been downloaded from 11.000 online scientific journals.

For 45 publishers download statistics are collected and combined to identify the number of downloads per scientific journal over 2013. For 2013, 3.8 million articles have been downloaded from almost 11.000 online scientific journals. The numbers were compared to the download statistics for online journals in 2012: in this year 3.7 million articles were downloaded from 10.500 online journals. Top journals for the number of downloads in 2013 and 2012 are Nature, Science, PNAS, Journal of Dairy Science and Plant Physiology.

The library subscribes to most online scientific journals (90%) in 'big deals'. A big deal means that you have access to all scientific journals from a specific publisher, such as Elsevier and American Chemical Society. The download statistics, in combination with other measures like journal citations in Wageningen UR scientific output are used to match the scientific journals subscriptions as good as possible to usage by Wageningen UR staff and students.
