Capita selecta: Perceptions of Nature in different cultural contexts (2020)

The way in which nature is perceived varies between cultures. As a result there are cultural differences in the view on the relationship between humans and nature. The lectures will discuss the image of nature in tribal civilizations, in Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism and Islam. Furthermore the perception of nature in the history of (Christian) Western civilization will be addressed. The subject will be approached from the perspectives of philosophy, theology , arts and sciences. Attendance at lectures and the writing of an essay provides 2 study points.

08 January:   Tribal civilizations

15 January:   Hinduism

22 January:   Buddhism and Taoism

29 January:   Judaism

19 February: Islam

26 February: Classical period and (Western) Middle Ages

11 March:     Renaissance and Modern Period.
