Dutch pulse trawl under pressure
The EU’s recent decision to reinstate a ban on the Dutch electric ‘pulse’ fishing has dominated headlines in the last week. As tensions flare, ENP and WMR researcher Marloes Kraan has been at the centre of the debate.
Based on her 2016 paper in ICES (Haasnoot et al. 2016), she argues that the Dutch government and fishing sector have focused too much on ‘pushing’ the new technology rather than managing a process of social transition.
Marloes Kraan and her colleages' research has featured in various recent Dutch national newspapers articles:
- Algemeen Dagblad. 20 jan 2018. Author: Annemieke van Dongen. Reconstructie opkomst en ondergang van omstreden vistechniek. ‘Nederland heeft het verkloot’
- Volkskrant. 20 jan 2018. Author: Marc van den Eerenbeemt and Tjerk Gualthérie van Weezel. De Fransen haten hen om hun pulsjes
