Grant for open online courses in Food Systems Analysis and Food Safety

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has awarded Wageningen University a grant to develop two new open online courses: Food Systems Analysis and Food Safety. Our first two open online courses, Nutrition101, Food for Health, run by Sander Kersten, and Growing our Future Food: Crops, run by Ken Giller, were launched in January.

On the one hand, the courses will be used to acquire experience with online teaching on the campus. But the Food Systems Analysis course will also help with the development and design of food production systems that do not exhaust resources or damage the environment. The Food Safety course will standardise the knowledge level of the heterogeneous group of national and international students, thereby improving the quality and pass rates for the MSc programme in Food Safety.

Selecting and taking one or more of these modules will enable students to shape their own learning process. The online teaching material will be available for prospective students to top up their knowledge from March 2016 onwards, and as from August 2016, public around the world will be able to participate actively in a MOOC, free of charge.

Jet Bussemaker, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, has awarded grants to eleven projects as part of the Open and Online Education incentive scheme. A total of 45 applications were submitted. Wageningen is one of the eleven institutes of higher education to be awarded a grant.

Minister Bussemaker hopes that the scheme will encourage universities and universities of applied science to put more effort into developing open and online education, including MOOCs (massive open online courses), SPOCs (small private online courses) and blended learning.
