Sixteen days after hatching young broilers received antibiotics through their drinking water for five days.

Although the microbiota were significantly affected by the administration, this change was small and only temporarily. The differences disappeared at day 16 after treatment started with amoxillin and at day 27 after enrofloxacin. Intestinal morphology and development were not visibly affected however intestinal immune parameters as T cells and cytokine expression were affected. The results of this study indicate that later in the broiler's life, antibiotics temporarily affect intestinal microbial and intestinal immune parameters.
