Mussel bank mapping from UAVs
Over the past year researchers from the UARSF have investigated the use of UAVs for mapping the extent and density of mussel banks in marine habitats in the Netherlands.
They have made flights both for a location in the Waddensea in the North and in the Westerschelde in the Southwest of the Netherlands. Their results show that compared to the traditional methods where GPS tracks are measured around the banks, the UAV acquired images give increased spatial detail and provide a good surface area comparison compared to the existing approach. The coming three years (2017-2019) this project will be continued for three locations for which a UAV based monitoring approach will be developed together with researchers of Wageningen Marine Research.
