New method to detect mussel toxins without using lab animals

Shellfish such as oysters and mussels may contain biotoxins that can make you very sick. That is why they are tested rigorously before they go on the market. Some countries still use mice and rats for such tests, while others use methods that do not use lab animals but can only detect known toxins. PhD student Marcia Bodero has developed an alternative method that uses cultured cells instead of animals and can detect both known and unknown toxins.
