When considering digital journals we are inclined to think that only recent issues are concerned, no more than some ten years old. However, thanks to certain initiatives by some publishers and organisations a lot of material of several hundred years old can be consulted.

The American Society of Chemistry, for instance, has made nearly all its journals available from Volume 1, and thanks to JSTOR ( the Scholarly Journal Archive) the publications of the Royal Society of London - Philosophical Transactions  - from the 17th century, can be accessed on your computer.
