The Open Research Data will be required for all funding areas of the EU research Horizon 2020 program.
An Open Research Data Pilot concerning a limited number of funding areas was recently completed. 65% of all projects in 2015 opted to share their data. In the updated 2017 work programme this requirement has been extended to calls in all areas. This policy aims to make data resulting from EU funded research "as open as possible, as closed as necessary". There are still opt-out options available to applicants, for example, for reasons of privacy, to respect intellectual property rights, or if opening up data might jeopardize a project's main objective. The guidelines for data management for Horizon 2020 have been updated accordingly.
