Opportunity for master thesis research in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Funded by DFID, Oxfam UK has started a large, multi-year project about basic services (sanitation and health) in Gemena, a semi-urban area of Democratic Republic of the Congo. Wageningen University is responsible for the research component of this project. One of specific research projects is about functional and adaptive governance arrangements for provision of basic services (sanitation and health) in areas of limited statehood. The aim of the research is to generate insights on how state and non-state actors develop and can develop institutional arrangements, decision-making structures and practical solutions in building sustainable sanitation facilities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a country that has faced civil war for long times and is now undergoing processes of de-centralization and de-concentration.

If you are interested in joining this program and can start preparations at short notice to conduct field work from June or July onwards, please send an e-mail on 7 April latest to Dr. Otto Hospes who is supervisor of this research project.

There are some special facilities for master students (travel budget, logistical support from Oxfam) in this project.
