RIKILT Wageningen UR and partners are to develop a ‘human gut’ on a chip. This gut-on-chip model will be used to test medicines and other possibly toxic substances, leading to a considerable reduction in animal testing in the future.
Mouth-stomach-intestineA mouth-stomach-intestine digestive and absorption model will be developed on a chip and connected to sensitive detection equipment. This combination will make it possible to test to a high level of accuracy whether particular chemical substances (such as nutrients and new medicines) are suitable for human consumption. It will also make it possible to detect any possible harmful effects on the intestines at an early stage.
The ‘High end Analytical Detection coupled to a Gut-on-a-chip’ project is partly funded by the NWO (the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research). The University of Groningen is leading the project and participants include – in addition to RIKILT Wageningen UR, Wageningen University, Friesland Campina, Galapagos, Europroxima and Micronit.
