Postharvest Technology course 5th edition
From 9 till 12 October the 5th edition of the Postharvest Technology course took place on Wageningen Campus. During four days this group of 35 participants got new insights and knowledge. Our experts provided them with a set of systematic and practical theories with regard to postharvest technology.
Programme
The programme contained lectures, demo’s, pitches, company visits and a cooking workshop for social interaction. Topics to be discussed were divers, for example product physiology, insect control, the cold chain logistics of a large variety of (tropical) fruits, vegetables & ornamentals and chilling injury. The group visited Phenomea, our new postharvest technology research facility at Wageningen Food and Biobased Research. During pitches and Q&A session various new technologies within the postharvest domain that will likely to enter commercial practice within 5 years were discussed, like non-destructive quality measurements, robotisation and “deep learning” technologies for sorting and objective quality control, the use of LED-light treatments before and after harvest to improve product quality and Big Data and ”Bayesian networks” for product quality prediction. For the application of theory in practice they jointly went on a field trip to NedCool BV a cool storage facility, tomato packer and distributer Prominent and fruit importer and ripener Nature’s Pride.
Participants & Experts
The programme attracted numerous technical managers, quality-surveyors, researchers, business developers, postharvest experts and decision-makers from a diversity of international operating organizations in the field of fresh produce.
The involved experts are working at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, the Horticulture and Product Physiology Group from Wageningen University and UC Davis Postharvest Technology Center. The course was successfully organized by Wageningen Academy.
