Program to develop breeding programs for Indonesian aquaculture extended

Researchers of Animal Breeding and Genomics provide training and support to local partners to develop breeding programs for Indonesian aquaculture.

The training is part of the project ‘Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security in Indonesia’ (FAFI) which has been extended by two years to increase impact on an industry level. Objectives are to implement practical and effective breeding programs for important aquaculture species in Indonesia: catfish, tilapia, gourami, carp, and shrimp. One of the first steps is to assess genetic diversity in existing populations of these species, essential for continuous genetic improvement. In addition, experiments will be performed to estimate genetic parameters of traits. Genetic parameters are used to predict and control genetic progress. Next to the development and implementation of breeding programs, training of local breeding program managers is an important objective of the project.

Catfish tested for performance

In a recent visit to Java, progress in the various breeding programs was discussed. Following last year’s training, designs of the various breeding programs were successfully adjusted to reduce costs and increase genetic gain. Currently, an experiment with catfish is being performed in which families are tested for their performance in growth and survival. The best fish from this experiment will be used in the breeding program, while data obtained from the experiment will be used to provide hands-on training to breeding program managers on the estimation of genetic parameters. Similar experiments will be performed with other species.
