Reducing copper in cattle manure: rumen by-pass copper

Gepubliceerd op

Copper (Cu) is one of the metals with a relatively high concentration in animal manure. By spreading the manure to fertilize our fields, Cu will accumulate in the soil. With financial support of ZuivelNL and Feed4Foodure, the absorption efficiency of different Cu sources in cattle was tested to reduce faecal excretion, in a research project entitled “Rumen by-pass copper”. The possibility to improve Cu absorption by feeding rumen-protected Cu sources was explored under laboratory circumstances and in an experimental setting. With the experimental methods used, a beneficial effect could however not be demonstrated in this pilot study.
