Unlike for humans, the lifetime of plant seeds is shortened in the presence of oxygen. By storing seeds under oxygen-free conditions their shelf life can be considerably prolonged.
Luigi Guarino is commenting on two recent publications by Wageningen UR and CGN on the Agricultural Biodiversity Weblog. In order to minimize the detrimental effects of oxygen on plants seeds, CGN has optimized its seed management procedures.
