Wageningen UR Image Collections offers a collection of cartograms and other images from the university’s former department of Sociology and sociography.

The collection is closely related to the scientific work of prof. Dr. E.W. Hofstee (1909-1987). He is the father of social sciences at Wageningen University. He is well known for his physical approach to social issues in which he used maps. He developed the Cartophoot to easily create maps with statistical data. The Cartophoot comprises a collection of different shaded puzzle pieces and a frame in the shape of the Netherlands or a Dutch province. Researchers placed the puzzle pieces in the frames to create a publishable thematic map. The map was then photographed on glass slides. These glass slides are now digitised. The Cartophoot is on display in the entrance hall of the Leeuwenborch.
