Sustainability and resilience of EU farming systems

Recently, PPS has led a participatory impact assessment of sustainability and resilience of EU farming systems. In the study, 11 case-studies were assessed, including intensive, extensive, specialized and mixed farming systems.

Sustainability and resilience

In the case-studies, overall sustainability was perceived to be moderate. Resilience was assessed to be low to moderate across case-studies. Currently, most of the studied farming systems show more signs of robustness than adaptability or transformability. Importance of system characteristics that convey resilience are case-specific. Some generalizations can be made with caution. According to stakeholder views in most case-studies, resilience is currently dependent on 1) having production coupled with local and natural capital, 2) spatial and temporal heterogeneity of farm types, 3) social self-organization of actors in the farming system. Also profitability of farming systems has a relative high perceived potential to contribute to resilience. However, current profitability is perceived to be low in most case-studies.

SURE-Farm project

The sustainability and resilience assessment is a part of the project “Towards SUstainable and REsilient EU FARMing systems” (SURE-Farm). SURE-Farm aims to analyze, assess and improve the resilience and sustainability of farms and farming systems in the EU. For this purpose, SURE-Farm creates scenarios and a novel and comprehensive resilience-enabling framework, develops a set of advanced risk assessment and management tools as well as an improved demographic assessment model and a resilience assessment tool for policies, and in conjunction with stakeholders, co-creates and applies an integrated resilience assessment model and co-designs implementation roadmaps. SURE-Farm has received funds from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 727520.
