A two week tailor-made Summer School: From Grass to Glass was successfully held for Bachelor students from Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU), China. With the vision of presenting the whole food production chain to gain the big picture of agriculture, this Summer School integrated knowledge from five different sciences groups, and was developed and organized by Wageningen Academy.

The 24 participants of the course are excellent Bachelor students from five distinctive study backgrounds in NAU: plant protection, agricultural resource and environment, horticulture, economics and management of agriculture and forestry, and land resources management. This Summer School offered them the opportunity to learn, experience and grow as students by explicitly designing the programme as a mixture of lectures and practical’s. Farm visits were integrated into the programme to give the students direct contact with the current technology and mentality of the modern agriculture application. Ph.D. candidates from different graduate schools in Wageningen University & Research acted as coordinators, which provided a diverse but integrated programme covering but not limited to:

- Climate change and agriculture
- Importance of soil and water
- Plant production systems
- Plant protection and circular economy
- Food product design
- Dutch dairy chain
- Sustainable farm management
- Food value chain model

During the programme, there was ample time for group works and discussions with the lecturers for the students to feel the education atmosphere at Wageningen University & Research and also to encourage the students to think and try to solve the pressing food and agricultural challenges. Inspired by the lecturers and visits, the students sparkled with innovative ideas contributing to sustainable agriculture, which will benefit not only China’s agriculture but also the world.
