On April 2nd, Environmental Technology hosted a group of researchers from Ghent University. In attendance were PhDs, postdocs, and professors from the groups BIOMATH, LabMET, and PaInT in Ghent as well as the Laboratory of Microbiology in Wageningen. The day started with presentations by Cees Buisman and Huub Rijnaarts from ETE, Ingmar Nopens from BIOMATH, Korneel Rabaey and Siegfried Vlaeminch from LabMET, and Sebastiaan Derese from PaInT.

After a lunch, and a few jokes about the Dutch tradition of drinking milk, a round of speed dating was performed. Wageningen researchers sat in fixed chairs, waiting for “Mr. or Mrs. Scientific Right” from Ghent to rotate through. Unfortunately, each “speed couple” only had two minutes to introduce their research before the bell forced Ghent researchers to shift on to the next date. Though the density of information during the speed dating was challenging, it did give everyone from Wageningen and Ghent the chance to meet. Thereafter, participants were able to follow-up on their successful matches during the poster session and lab tours given by Cees and Huub.

The evening ended with inspiring drinks and a hearty dinner. Overall, the day fostered stimulating discussion and knowledge exchange. All the participates look forward to the next “idea collision” at Ghent University next year.
