An intensive use of greenhouse screens helps growers in making large savings on fossil energy use. Recently, KaeB program funded a research project in which protocols to measure the physical characteristics that affect the energy saving (%) of each specific screen were developed. This allowed for a more precise and standardized calculation of the yearly energy saving of each screen.
However, all this lab protocols were developed to be used with dry screen samples, whereas in practice, screens in are wet during most of the hours that they are used due to condensation. The energy saving of a wet screen may differ from that of a dry screen. To solve this, a new project is been developed in which measuring protocols are been developed/adapted to measure in wet screen samples. This will allow to quantify the effect of condensation on the screens on how much energy the screen can save, help manufacturers in designing more energy efficient screens and growers to make their screen choice and even how to manage screens more efficiently. This research is funded by the Kas als Energiebron program of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
