MACOBIOS (cofin)

MaCoBioS is a project implemented within the Horizon 2020 program (call: H2020-LC-CLA-2018-2019-2020) on "Building a low-carbon, climate-resilient future: Climate action in support of the Paris Agreement, second phase. The requested and obtained KB budget serves as co-financing of the MaCoBioS project. The project is realized by research institutes from 17 EU countries The project aims to strengthen management and conservation strategies of European natural marine resources and ecosystems in accordance with the activities in the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) The total budget amounts to almost 7 million euros.

The aim of this project is to ensure efficient and integrated management and conservation strategies for European Marine Coastal Ecosystems (MCE) to face climate change (CC). Activities within the project include:

  • Developing new models on the interaction between CC, biodiversity, functions and services in MCE (seagrass beds, coral reefs, mangroves, coralligenous and calcareous bio-concretion assemblages, salt marshes and kelp forests) along a geographical gradient from the tropics to the sub-polar regions, incorporating indicators of the ecological condition in the functional modelling of MCE.
  • Establishing a framework to assess the vulnerability of marine social-ecological systems under CC scenarios.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of nature-based solutions and protection measures at enhancing the resilience capacity of MCE and the delivery of services.
  • Provide evidence-based guidance for marine policy formulation and innovative research pathways to support policymakers in developing cost-effective strategies and create further research opportunities to meet the targets of EU strategies on Biodiversity and CC.
