Sustainable production of traditional Chinese medicine for skincare products

Our ambition is to develop a new chain for novel skincare creams with ingredients from TCMs, cultivated in TCM Ingredient Farms. This could stimulate the use of sustainably produced TCM in the Netherlands without increasing the pressure on the natural environment in China. Also, there is a growing interest among Chinese companies to invest in high-tech greenhouse technology to increase sustainable and pesticide free food production for a growing population. We therefore propose combining the best traditions and knowledge from the two countries and develop a TCM Ingredient Farm.

We want to investigate the feasibility of this case and develop a cooperation among Chinese and Dutch SMEs and academic partners. This project contributes to a more biobased and circular horticulture in the Netherlands and China and also to better food security in China. Thus, it contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 2 (zero hunger), 8 (decent work and economic growth) and 12 (responsible consumption and production).
