Project
KvM Centre of Excellence small holder cattle farming
The plan is to set-up a demonstration/research unit for small scale cattle farmers in the Amazone/Cerrado biome. Small scale farmers are responsible for 50% of the meat production in the area, use little to no technology and are probably responsible for more than 50% of illegal deforestation. They have very limited access to resources, alternatives or methods for sustainable intensification of production without expansion through clearing of new (forest)land.
The project is complimentary to and seeks synergy with activities by IDH in the region that works on sustainable cattle ranching with larger scale farmers; with more resources. The project builds on experiences from Solidaridad and aims to further investigate and provide prove of concept for improvement of integrated (cattle) farming models with a view to expand and scale up to the whole Amazone and Cerrado biome in the future.
The models adhere to standards set out by the round table on sustainable beef (GTPS) The (applied) research component will include among others Better use of inputs Improvement of pastures (and management) Provision of alternatives for use of degraded soils Improvement of genetics Identification of possible diversification of the agro system Improvement of general, cost effective farm management Innovation and sustainability are to be key in all (research) activities.
The project seeks cooperation with the national agricultural research institute EMBRAPA to strengthen research and assist in dissemination and up-scaling of the program in the future. The project will make use of existing networks, contacts, stakeholders and local governments and create a virtual platform for communication for coordination and communication.
