SMP23022 SMP Nutrifoods

In Africa, rural communities traditionally prepare meals from locally grown Climate Resilient Crops (CRC) like cassava, sorghum and pulses. However, with fast population growth, urbanization, and increasing disposable incomes, consumption of westernized convenient foods made from mostly imported wheat is increasing rapidly and displacing traditional meals.

Food system transformations are required urgently to improve the food systems resilience against the effects of climate change and geopolitical stresses, to safeguard food and nutrition security and strengthen economies and self-sufficiency. Promoting the use of local Climate-Resilient Crops into added-value nutritious food products can lead to considerable nutritional, economical and sustainability improvements and a key-intervention to improve the resilience of sub-Sahara African food system.
