SMP23034 Pesticide-free & biocontrol-based chrysanthemum production along the international value chain

The production of chrysanthemum flowers by Dutch growers involves production locations in both the Netherlands and East-Africa. All actors along the value chain are under pressure to produce clean plants without pesticide (residue)s. It starts with the demands of the consumers and the retail industry that increasingly put pressure on Dutch chrysanthemum growers to abandon the use of pesticides.

At this moment the research on biological pest control in chrysanthemum is very scattered. To ensure future access of chrysanthemum flowers to the Dutch and European market, all parties involved in the international value chain
will have to develop a joint vision on biological pest and disease control in chrysanthemum and identify challenges and opportunities within all the subsequent links along the value chain. With the proposed SMP project, for the first time such a joint vision and action plan on biological pest and disease control involving the entire international horticultural value chain will be developed.
