Lecturing in English in the International Classroom (Online course)

The demands of internationalisation are increasingly a consideration for lecturers. However, as an experienced lecturer, further developing your lecturing skills requires insight and careful self-reflection. The goal is to provide the most effective learning experience for students of all backgrounds and cultures, without losing your unique voice and energy. The Lecturing in English in the International Classroom online course aims to do just that by giving you the chance to reflect on your own practice at a time and place of your choosing.

This course is online. This means
- all materials are available online
- you study at a time and place of your choosing
- you receive feedback from and interact with your tutor online on a regular basis

Course level

  • In this course, everyone is assessed at their own level and everyone has their own learning and growth curve. This is why this course is suitable for anyone between B2 and C2+ (CEFR) level.
  • An Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT) score of 70+ is required.

Course content

The assignments throughout the course are designed to encourage you to think about how you lecture and what language you need to improve, as well as to provide insight into the demands of international students. Most reflection and assignments receive considered feedback from our experts and there are also opportunities to discuss and share ideas with other course participants.

Introductory Module

Before gaining access to the 4 content modules, you will submit a short video of yourself giving a lecture or tutorial and a reflection on your own lecturing style. Based on this, your tutor will give you personalized advice on key areas to focus on during the course.

Module 1

Getting Started: The language you need to begin each lecture effectively and efficiently. In addition, Setting the scene will help you to analyse your own technique for generating enthusiasm and engagement from the onset. At the end of this module you will also receive feedback on your grammar and pronunciation and tips on how you can make better use of your voice to gain students’ attention and communicate your message.

Module 2

Structuring a Lecture: How to clearly structure each lecture. Structuring a lecture includes the language you need to clearly outline the goals and to communicate the planned structure of the lecture with your students. In addition, you will learn how to clarify and check whether the information has been imparted and how to finish on a strong note.

Module 3

Managing Tricky Classroom Situations: This module will give you the language you need to effectively answer questions clearly and coherently. In addition, this module reviews the language you need to impart specific knowledge via presentations, such as visuals and figures. This language development will help you to build the engagement and interaction which your students have with your material.

Module 4

The international Classroom: How attention to language can help foster and build good relationships within a classroom both between students and between the teacher and the students. In addition to language, The international classroom also looks at the different communication styles and expectations of students from different cultures. This understanding is vital to create a supportive, welcoming and productive learning environment.
