The Power of Words - 29 January

Although English language learners worry more about their grammar, it is often the case that a lack of vocabulary is the real barrier to successful communication.  The words you choose, or not, can convey more than simple ideas.  They can impart meaning, underlying messages and opinions, or change the course of history.

But with 800 new words being added to the English dictionary every year, where do you start?  This one-day booster course will show you how to acquire new vocabulary, identify new words and their meaning, and how to continue to develop your personal vocabulary acquisition path; to create a personalised dictionary of the words you need in both your professional and personal life.

Storytelling - 30 January

Academic research that doesn’t interact with society exists in a vacuum. Nothing survives in a vacuum. To thrive, researchers need effective narrative tools for sharing their projects.  Good communication enables multi-disciplinary cooperation, successful funding applications, and positive interactions with the media.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to share their research using the medium of story. Story structures are ancient and relatively consistent, going back to oral traditions around the world. The core structures of story are found today in everything from Star Wars to Moana to Heel Holland Bakt.

Story structures can accommodate large amounts of complex information. This workshop will introduce participants to basic story structure. Through a combination of engaging activities and individual feedback, participants will use these structures to improve their own research story. Participants can use the method introduced in the workshop in a variety of contexts after the workshop concludes.
