Large amounts of nitrogen are released during the plowing of grassland after clover-cultivation. Better utilization of this nitrogen is needed.
Dutch dairy farmers want to know how they can optimize the utilization of nitrogen in crop rotations with grass-clover as the main crop. Questions are, among others, how long the duration of the grass-clover period should be, and how dairy manure should be distributed among the various crops in rotation. To answer these questions, a long-term field trial was executed from 2002 through 2010. In this trial, all combinations of 7 crop rotation schemes and 4 manure distribution schemes were investigated. This project focuses on reporting the results of this trial in order to support dairy farmers in their efforts to optimize the utilization of nitrogen in cropping rotations with grass-clover and in the use of dairy manure.
