Description

The germination of seeds is a topic that has received much attention in Plant Sciences. Modelling germination times of seeds resulted in software programs like SeedCalculator, developed by Plant Research International.

Recently new insights in the way to analyse germination data, led to different statistical analysis methods, based on survival analysis and right- and interval-censored data. This new analysis method is available in the R-package drc, available on CRAN.

In this MSc-thesis project first you will acquaint yourself (if needed) with R, specifically by studying the methods available in the drc package. Next you are using this new method, and compare results with the more traditional approach, analysing the fractions of germinated seeds per timepoint. You may analyse existing data, but you are also going to simulate germination data for a more thorough comparison of methods.

Aim of the MSc thesis project

During the MSc thesis, attention will be focussed on:

-       Getting acquainted with R

-       Getting acquainted with old and new (in R-package drc) statistical analysis methods for germination curves

-       Comparing old and new analysis methods by analysis of existing and simulated datasets.
