In coming decades there will be an increasing need for sufficient biomass for food, feed and bio-products. A sustainable biobased economy benefits from a high production of biomass an as low as possible amount of waste.
The production of biomass in aquatic production is one of the possibilities. A prerequisite for this is that these types of systems are able to achieve a high production. The duckweed fern Azolla is one of the fastest growing and most productive plants on earth (and thus can provide a large biomass production). The goal of this project is to achieve a maximum Azolla biomass production.
