The harbor porpoise is a vulnerable and protected species. Bycatch in gillnet fishery is regarded as the greatest threat to this species. This project is designed to test the deterrent effect of two types of pingers on porpoises.
Initially the DDD-02, because this type of pinger produces a relatively strong signal, and also the new bananapinger. C-and T-pods are used to detect porpoise sonar clicks. There is a need for testing pingers in an independent way.
Although foreign research indicates that pingers have a deterrent effect, it is far from certain that this also applies to the situation for the Dutch coast. The Dutch coastal waters are shallow and very busy, and sound present in soil and surface waters reflects in a different way than in foreign trials. The project is carried out in close cooperation with the Dutch Association Coast & Sea.
