To make the Dutch fisheries more sustainable, the transition from beam to demersal trawls (TR1 and TR2 vehicles) is encouraged by measures taken by the Dutch Ministry. Strive is to create sufficient fishing days at sea for fishermen with demersal trawls, especially those who catch cod as bycatch.
Therefore, this project is a multiyear approach to make the transfer of BT2 sea vehicles to TR1 and TR2 vehicles (including twinrig, flyshoot) permanent. IMARES has investigated whether the initiated measures can lead to a reduction in cod catches per unit effort.
The researchers of IMARES have also examined whether this reduction is sufficient to undo the discount of days at sea. The results provide the Ministry with an answer to the question whether the planned reduction in catch is feasible with the proposed measures.
