Cultivation above the ground: apples

The apple cultivation contributes to nitrogen leaching in sandy soils, and chemical soil disinfestation will be prohibited.

Besides apple growers have some cultivation needs, such as fruit size regulation, uniformity in the planting and reducing the susceptibility to scab and canker.

The aim of this project is to provide proof of principles for the cultivation away from soil for apples in order to minimize the nitrogen leaching on sandy soils. Given the duration of the cycle of the apple growing, which is in soil 12 years, this will be a limited exploration. The trees were planted on 20 June 2011. The trees of all treatments are doing well.
