European cooperation on plant genetic resources

Almost all European countries have established genebanks en developed a national policy or programme on plant genetic resources.

The establishment of genebank at the national level requires close consultation between national collection holders in order to avoid duplication and to optimally benefit from expertise available in the region.


Increasing the effectivity and efficiency of the European efforts in the area of plant genetic resources conservation and utilization through regional cooperation.


  • Contribution to the formulation and implementation of an EU PGR infrastructure project proposal.
  • Contribution to the development of the AEGIS project, aimed at the establishment of European collections.
  • Contribution to the activities of the ECPGR networks.
  • Maintenance of a number of European Central Crop Databases.
