GMO detection by the European Media Monitor

To ensure the high food standards in Europe, this project aims to optimize the existing European Media Monitor (EMM) for new Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

The monitor will expand with a signal module for worldwide unauthorized GMOs that are not assessed on safety for humans, animals and the environment. The project supports the Dutch Ministry in the enforcement of European legislation on GMOs. Other potential users of EMM and organizations in Europe involved in the enforcement of EU-legislation on GMOs do also benefit.

RIKILT and Food & Biobased Research of Wageningen UR work for this research with the developers of the European Food Safety Authority and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. At Ispra in Italy they will jointly improve the EMM for the detection of GMOs. The proposed improvement of EMM is tested and implemented in 2012. This will lead to an improved version of EMM and a report describing the analysis of EMM and possible improvements.
