How to prevent ecosystem tipping points from exceeding and thus lose important ecological services?

This project examines which semi-natural ecosystems are susceptible to turning points. When this occurs, such systems may lose important ecological services. The researchers want to know under what conditions turning points will occur.

Climate change and other external changes can lead to turning points in ecosystems. For freshwater communities this has already been studied. This project investigates possible turning points at soil ecosystems. Associated soil functions can therefore change irreversible. Understanding turning points and their consequences may help to prevent changes in soil functions, which is important for various agricultural and nature conservation purposes in the Netherlands.
