Project
Increase the sustainability of otter populations
In 2002 the government started a reintroduction program for the otter (Lutra lutra) in the Netherlands, after this species was officially extinct in our country since 1988. In the period 2002-2008 a total of 31 otters was released. In 2010 the reintroduction program formally ended.
There is now a growing otter population, but it is still rather fragile. The aim of this project is to increase the sustainability of the Dutch otter population. Therefore, genetic variation and the hotspots for traffic victims are inventoried.
