sand drifting

Project

Innovative drift suppressers for reducing drift damage on light (sandy) soils

Wind Erosion or drift can cause a lot of damage and other nuisances. Several innovations to suppress this drift will be tested.

Abstract

Wind erosion is a big problem in the northeast of The Netherlands and the Dutch isle Texel. Damage that can arise from this is the destruction of the ground structure, damaging through scraping of young plants, overblow of newly sown seed, the possible spread of weed seeds and soil diseases, moreover, wind erosion burdens the local traffic and population. To prevent wind erosion, ground cover can be sown, barley can be sown together with the crops or a soil binding product can be sprayed over the soil. The goal of this project is to test innovative alternatives to prevent wind erosion.
