First of all we investigate which insect cases the problems, the Silver Y (Autographa gamma) or other flying insects? We examine the entire chain (from producer to processor) to develop measures to reduce the number of insects in processed spinach.
Approach and timeline
Spinach - but also other leafy greens - has to do with a quality problem: the presence of insects in processed spinach. Customers in the industry have an urgent demand for quality improvement at this point of view. They don’t want insects in processed spinach but is this possible?
Our intended result is a strong reduction in the number of insects found in processed spinach so the supermarket will receive fewer complaints from consumers. The research and results are presented and discussed in the project team. An article will be written in December – February 2011.
