The possibilities for a marine mammal sanctuary in the Caribbean are examined. Such a sanctuary for example could limit the hunt on whales.
Marine mammals are protected worldwide by international treaties. At the same time there is still whaling, including in the Caribbean. Setting a reserve in this region would help to combat these activities and would strengthen the Dutch position (against whaling). It is established that the Caribbean Dutch exclusive economic zone (EEZ) possesses a rich and diverse marine mammal fauna worth protecting. The report presents the main arguments for the ecological protection of these species by a marine mammal sanctuary.
