Microbes grow in biofilms and compete with other biofilms

In this project we study biofilm formation by plant microbes. The plant microbiome plays an important role in keeping the plant healthy. Most microbiome species attach to the plant and encase themselves in a sticky matrix, a process called biofilm formation. A biofilm is defined as an aggregation of microbes in an extracellular matrix, adherent to each other and often to a surface. Biofilm-growing microbes have increased tolerance to environmental stresses but also to antimicrobial compounds. A competition strategy employed by microbes is the breakdown of biofilms of their competitors. This biological warfare between microbiome species is studied.
