Project

Mussel seed capture-installation

Predictive models are developed to substantiate future policy decisions on the mussel fishery.

Abstract

In the Dutch coastal waters mussel fishery takes place. These waters also harbor important natural values and most waters are therefore designated as nature reserves under the Nature Conservation Act or the European Birds and Habitats Directives. This obliges the Netherlands to make sure that the natural values in these areas remain intact.

This project investigated:
• Carrying capacity of the Wadden Sea and Oosterschelde filtering shellfish.
• Ground Effects in different habitats.
• Disturbance of birds and seals by mussel seed harvesting activities.
• Contamination by litter.
