On land, the conservation status of a habitat type under the Habitats Directive is assessed on the basis of four aspects: size, distribution, structure and function, and future prospects. 'Typical species' is one of the quality elements in the Dutch elaboration of the European description of the habitat types.
A guideline is available which describes how to deal with these typical species. For Natura 2000 sites at sea this guideline is not sufficient. The aim of this project is to advice on how to deal with typical species in the management plan for the tidal waters in relation to quality and conservative-enhancing measures.
