Nile agricultural model

To support agricultural production and productive water use the Nile Basin Agricultural Model (AM) has been developed.

The AM coherently and consistently integrates state-of-the-art descriptions of hydrological, biophysical and economic processes to predict the effects of policy-options for trade, food security and economic development. The AM consists of an agricultural productivity model (the FAO AquaCrop model) and an economic model (a Nile basin specific version of the global commodity trade model MAGNET) to allocate crops based on sustainable water and soil management, use hydrological information to calculate the available water, predict crop productivity and irrigation requirements, and balance supply and demand and calculates the trade and impacts.

The AM is integrated in the existing Nile Basin Decision Support System (DSS) with databases, additional functionality and a Hydrological model. The DSS is an instrument for countries in the Basin to explore and decide on options to develop their shared water resources. It provides tools for knowledge–based water resource management.

Application

The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), a partnership of the Nile Basin riparian Countries, Burundi, D.R. Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South-Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Eritrea (participates as an observer) wants to increase knowledge of Nile basin agriculture in NBI organizations and will use the AM as part of the DSS to promote more efficient and sustainable use of water resources and economically viable investment in agriculture. Use of the AM assists member states to identify development opportunities, prepare projects and seek investments. Use of the AM at basin level helps the Nile basin countries to promote the sustainable management of the common Nile water resources, to optimize agricultural production and to stimulate economic growth.
