Nitrogen contamination of shallow groundwater and surface waters in marine clay areas

The research project aims to quantify the sources of nitrogen contamination of shallow groundwater and surface waters in marine clay areas. Also the managebility of these sources by fertilization reduction or by water management strategies will be assessed.

Approach and timeline

The nitrogen concentrations in surface waters of marine clay areas often exceed the regionally defined standards. Also the nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwater can exceed the 50 mg/l target level. The nitrate concentrations in groundwater and the nitrogen concentrations in surface waters do show only a week relation with land use and fertilization rates in these areas. Quantification of the diffuse nitrogen sources which contaminate groundwater and surface waters is desired for gaining insight into the managebility of the contamination by fertilization reduction or by water management strategies.

  • report with information of the diffuse sources of nitrate in shallow groundwater and nitrogen in surface waters in marien clay areas
  • maps containing information on vulnerability and managebility
