Dairy cattle

Project

Nutrition organic dairy cattle: feed experiment

Goal of this project is to optimize the economics of a ration in a situation with limited supply of roughage or with very expensive roughage by using the DLM technique.

Approach and timeline

In 2009 the project consist of 4 subprojects:

A. Optimize protein content in rations
B. Optimize roughage utilization.
C. Maize starch as concentrate.
D. Feeding value of red and white clover

The subproject B will be finished in 2010. The rest has been finished in 2009.

Optimize roughage utilization

On many organic dairy farms the roughage provision is a bottleneck. Purchasing roughage is often expensive or hardly possible due to a shortage. Using the DLM technique offers the possibility to optimize the economics of a ration in a situation with limited supply of roughage or with very expensive roughage.

Results

A feeding experiment with dairy cattle on experimental farm Aver Heino. In this experiment the economics of the ration will be optimized by using the DLM technique. Due to data communication problems the execution of the experiment is postponed to 2010.

The results of this project will be published together with the results of project A.
