The use of the sea as a natural system of ecological and technological developments is emerging. The marine and coastal systems are being used more intensively for different functions.
This creates new competing claims in this area, ranging from biodiversity and fish reserves to areas for wind turbines, shipping et cetera. Recently, the top sector business case Multifunctional Platforms (MUPS) was added.
The core of the concept of MUPS is to locate at sea various economic activities combined in a way that the ecosystem and humans take full advantage of each other without hindering. The goal of this project is to explore the policy instruments for spatial planning which are important in the planning and realization of multifunctional platforms in the North Sea.
